Why does your home’s air conditioner freeze in the summer?

Published on June 30, 2015

Your home’s central air conditioner works hard to keep you and your family cool during the hottest times of the year in Kingston. Unfortunately, it’s more likely than you might think for your air conditioner to become overworked, potentially restricting the airflow to your home. As warm as it may be outside, your air conditioner can actually freeze. If this has happened to your air conditioner, don’t panic. Continue reading this post to find out why it has happened and if you should schedule air conditioner service to deal with the problem.

If your air conditioner becomes frozen, the problem is the evaporator coil within the condenser unit. There are two likely reasons the coil might freeze. First, the airflow through the coil is restricted. The system is trying to send more cold air through the coil than it can handle and therefore frost starts to accumulate on the air conditioner and slow the process even more. Eventually the frozen water may cause damage to the key parts of your AC.

If this is not the case, a frozen AC may be due to a low level of refrigerant. Similarly, if this is the case, there simply isn’t enough “juice” to completely transport the air through the coil and things start to freeze up, giving your air conditioner a layer of ice and stopping your home from receiving the cool air it needs.

If your air conditioner has stopped working properly and shows visible signs of frost or ice, don’t worry. Follow these simple steps and your home will be comfortable and cool again in no time.

  • Go to the thermostat and turn off your air conditioner all the way.
  • Look at other areas of your AC through which air flows to make sure air is not restricted. Make sure your air filters are clean and all the registers and vents are free of debris.
  • Kingston has most experienced HVAC technicians at Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning, call now and arrange your air conditioner service. Whether your air conditioner is low on refrigerant or the evaporator coil is restricted, this is an issue that should be addressed by AC pros.

Now find a good cool spot in front of the fan and wait for your technician to show up. They will be able to make an expert diagnosis of the specific problem with your air conditioner and let you know what kind of air conditioner service you will need to repair the problem. Call Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning at 613-817-1591 today or go online to make your air conditioner service appointment now.
